Silva/Bradshaw is a multi-disciplinary design studio founded in 2010 by artist/designers Matthew Bradshaw and Sergio Silva.  Long time collaborators, they met while studying Industrial Design at New York’s Pratt Institute. From their studio in Brooklyn they design and produce conceptually driven objects, informed by a shared passion for technology and materials. Current projects include the design and branding of a restaurant, furniture for a high end residential project, as well as a continuation of their already popular collection of simple jewelry pieces.

We picked our favorite pieces from Silva/Bradshaw’s excellent catalog of subtle, thoughtful jewellery designs. Our selections are from the Leva series and the Tools series – available in nylon pop colours, stainless steel and coated stainless, rose gold, and sterling silver finishes. The designers’ focus on abstract forms that vaguely resemble mechanical or utilitarian shapes make for very wearable jewellery that hints at something more.

The duo will also be exhibiting at ‘The American Design In Paris’ show at Triode Design Gallery  this coming weekend with the likes of industrial designers such as  Jason Miller,  CMMNWLTH, and Lindsey Adelman just to name a few.

The new S/S12 collection for Helmut Lang has just arrived at Roden Gray. Here is an interview by Dazed Digital with the designers of the collection husband and wife Michael and Nicole Colovos regarding their inspiration for this season:

Having taken over the 90s minimalist giant in 2007, design duo Michael and Nicole Colovos spent the next few years honing and redefining the brand into their own, instead of a shadowing it on its previous and epynmnous designer. For Spring Summer 2012, the couple decided the time had come to take the brand ‘on the road’, and the very first Helmut Lang Mark II catwalk show was a fact. Using the Hudson River’s Pier 57, Michael and Nicole showed a mostly monochrome collection focused around wrapped, draped and flowing materials.

Cropped jackets, harem trousers and layered tops all added to a strong and cohesive aesthetic. Except for black and white a light grey snuck into the palette, only to be completely drowned out in in the bright light from a gorgeously strong yellow and an abstract paint print. Many of the tailored jackets either came with oversized and flowing lapels or no lapels whatsoever. Hopefully this was just one of many Helmut Lang catwalk shows to come…

Dazed Digital: How come you chose right now to start doing a catwalk show?
Michael and Nicole Colovos: In the beginning we just wanted to focus on getting our business straight. We always wanted to do it but we started from scratch and there was so much preparations to take care of. I’m happy we got our vision sorted out before we started doing shows.

DD: Was there anything in particular that made you start this season?
Michael and Nicole Colovos: Everything just seemed to work out and we had a great flow and a great team.. it all came together.

DD: What was your starting point for S/S12?
Michael and Nicole Colovos: We wanted to try and do a few different volumes and shapes. We often combine different textures, different elements. We were also playing with contrasts, colours and textures playing off each other.

DD: Did you look toward anything in particular for inspiration?
Michael and Nicole Colovos: The painter Richard Serra, how he used contrasts and texture…

DD: Any pieces that you think sums up the collection particularly well?
Michael and Nicole Colovos: Maybe the ones towards the end, the ones that that have a mishmash of textures on the front. We used a combination of leather, cord, sequins, chunky embroideries.

Acne Studios designer Jonny Johansson takes his inspiration for Pre Spring 12 looks from the 40′s and 50′s. He uses materials that are true to its natural form by letting the fabrics wrinkle and crease organically. A rich palette of pumpkin, plum, sea foam, and lemon yellow set off the black, white, and denim indigo. His use of color makes the collection unfussy and fun. Brooklyn- based designer Hanna Sandin founded SAMMA in 2009. The jewelry line developed out of Sandin’s work in sculpture and is defined by a stripped down vocabulary of form; elemental lines and simplified shapes cast in non-precious materials — brass, bronze, copper — combine and repeat, while slight variations and irregularities, a result of each piece being handmade, add nuance, warmth, and tactility.
